Wildlife at Mistico Hanging Bridges: What You'll Actually See

4/23/2026 · Arenal Volcano Park Team

Mistico Park is famous for its sixteen suspended bridges threading through the rainforest canopy. The bridges are spectacular on their own — but the real attraction is what lives in the layers of forest you walk above, beside and through. Here is the honest guide to what you can expect to see.

The most commonly spotted species

On a typical morning visit, guests usually spot at least four to six of the following:

  • Howler monkeys — heard before seen; their dawn calls travel for kilometers
  • White-faced capuchin monkeys — active and curious, often near the trail
  • Sloths — both two-toed and three-toed; slow but rewarding when spotted
  • Coatis — raccoon cousins that travel in groups along the forest floor
  • Toucans — the chestnut-mandibled and keel-billed both live here
  • Tarantulas — typically tucked into bark, your guide knows the spots
  • Eyelash vipers — small, beautiful, and always pointed out from a safe distance

The harder-to-see prizes

You will not see these on every visit, but lucky guests do find them: jaguarundis, tayras, motmots, blue-crowned manakins, and the secretive but unforgettable resplendent quetzal (more often spotted in higher cloud forests, but Mistico has had sightings).

Best time of day

The first tour of the morning (around 7 a.m.) is best for wildlife activity. Sloths slept through the night and are just starting to move; monkeys are active and noisy; the canopy mist is at its most photogenic. The late afternoon tour is second-best — particularly for bird activity before sunset.

Why a guide makes the difference

Walking the trail yourself, you will see beautiful forest and a couple of obvious animals. Walking with a Mistico naturalist guide, you will see fifteen times more — sloths thirty meters up, snakes the diameter of a pencil curled on a branch, frogs sleeping in folded leaves. The guides carry telescopes that they set up so you can actually see what they're pointing at, and they bring laminated cards with the species names in English and Spanish.

What to bring

  • Light rain jacket — it can drizzle even on dry days
  • Closed-toe shoes with grip — bridges can be slippery after rain
  • Insect repellent — the canopy is mostly fine but the entrance trail has mosquitoes
  • Camera or phone with a decent zoom — wildlife is usually 10+ meters away
  • Binoculars if you have them — toucans become whole-different-bird with magnification
  • Water bottle — there are no shops along the trail

Honest expectations

This is a rainforest, not a zoo. Some days the monkeys are loud and visible; other days they are deep in the forest and quiet. The trail is gorgeous either way, and even a quiet wildlife day means walking 250 meters above the forest floor on engineered bridges. Treat any animal sighting as a bonus and you will leave delighted.

Pairing the visit with other activities

Mistico is two hours start to finish, which makes it the perfect morning activity. Pair it with hot springs in the afternoon for a low-key combo, or with a chocolate tour or coffee farm for a cultural balance. We often build itineraries around Mistico for guests who care about wildlife but also want comfort.
