How to Get to La Fortuna from San José Airport (and Beyond)

5/7/2026 · Arenal Volcano Park Team

La Fortuna is roughly three hours from San José International Airport (SJO) by road. The drive winds through coffee farms and mountain valleys and is beautiful — but the planning depends on whether you want to spend money, time, or stress. Here is the honest comparison.

Option 1: Shared shuttle (cheapest)

Shared shuttles cost around $50–60 per person each way. You're picked up at the airport (or your hotel) and driven door-to-door in an air-conditioned 12-passenger van. Trip takes 3.5–4.5 hours including a snack stop and other passenger pickups. This is the value pick for solo travelers and couples.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • No need to drive yourself
  • Door-to-door service

Cons

  • Fixed schedule — usually 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Multiple hotel pickups can add an hour
  • Less privacy on a tiring travel day

Option 2: Private shuttle (most popular)

A private vehicle for your party at $180–250 total — meaning under $60 each for a family of four and quite reasonable for two travelers as well. Direct, on your schedule, with stops where you want them. We recommend this option to about 70% of guests.

Pros

  • Leave when you want
  • Direct route — fastest option after charter flight
  • Stops at scenic viewpoints or the Tabacón river if you want
  • Driver is a local who shares trip tips

Cons

  • Higher cost than shared shuttle
  • Still 3+ hours by road

Option 3: Rental car / self-drive

Renting a car from SJO gives you full flexibility — visit other regions before or after Arenal, take detours, stay an extra day. Roads to La Fortuna are paved and well-marked. Costa Rica drives on the right; an international driver's permit is recommended.

Pros

  • Total flexibility
  • Easy to combine multiple regions
  • Can be cheaper than shuttles if you're a group of four

Cons

  • Insurance and tolls add up — budget 25% above the base rate
  • Driving conditions can be unfamiliar (potholes, traffic in San José)
  • You're responsible for parking, fuel, and any incidents

Option 4: Charter flight (fastest)

A 25-minute small-plane flight from SJO to La Fortuna airport. Roughly $200–300 per person. The fastest option and a scenic one — you fly over coffee mountains and approach over Lake Arenal. Worth it for short trips where every hour counts, and unbeatable for guests with mobility considerations.

Pros

  • 25 minutes vs. 3.5 hours
  • Aerial views of the volcano
  • Easy on the body for older travelers

Cons

  • Most expensive option
  • Weather can ground flights — buffer a backup plan
  • Small luggage allowance (typically 30 lbs / 14 kg)

From Liberia airport (LIR)

Liberia is closer to La Fortuna than San José (around 2.5 hours by road). If you can fly into LIR, you save time on both ends of the trip. Private shuttles run $200–250 and shared shuttles $55–65 per person.

From the Pacific beaches

  • Tamarindo / Guanacaste beaches: 3 hours by road
  • Manuel Antonio: 5 hours by road
  • Monteverde: 3 hours of mountain road (rougher but spectacular)

Our recommendation

For most travelers — couples, families with school-age kids, groups of friends — the private shuttle is the right answer. The price difference vs. shared is small once you split it, and the time you save lets you arrive in La Fortuna in time for a proper first dinner instead of frazzled. We can book it as part of your itinerary; just tell us your flight times.
