Family Adventure in Arenal: 7 Activities Kids (and Parents) Will Love
4/9/2026 · Arenal Volcano Park Team
La Fortuna might be the easiest tropical adventure destination on the planet for families. The activities are short, the staff is genuinely good with children, and there is enough variety to keep different ages happy without exhausting the parents. Here are the seven we recommend most often.
1. Mistico Hanging Bridges (all ages)
A two-hour walk through the canopy on suspended bridges, some 50 meters above the forest floor. The trail is flat and stroller-friendly in parts. Toddlers ride in carriers, school-age kids race ahead to the next bridge, and teens take wildlife photos. Booking the guided version is worth it — the guides spot animals you would walk right past.
2. Baldi Hot Springs day pass (all ages)
Three water slides, twenty-five pools at different temperatures, a swim-up bar (juice for kids), and an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet. It is the closest thing to a tropical resort day pass and works perfectly for the rest day in the middle of your itinerary.
3. Sloth Territory Guided Tour (ages 4+)
A short, easy walk through a private rainforest reserve with biologist guides whose only job is finding sloths. The success rate is close to 100%. Kids leave knowing the difference between two-toed and three-toed sloths and feeling like real explorers.
4. La Fortuna Waterfall (ages 7+)
A 500-step descent to a 70-meter waterfall and a swimming hole at its base. The hike back up is real — best for kids who can manage stairs without complaint. The reward is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Central America and a swim in cold mountain water.
5. Sky Aerial Tram (ages 3+)
A 25-minute open-air gondola ride over the rainforest canopy with mountain and volcano views. Perfect for grandparents joining the trip too. Pair it with the Sky Trek zipline if your kids are over 8 and want adrenaline.
6. Horseback ride to Arenal Volcano (ages 6+)
Two hours through farmland and lower forest with views of the volcano and Lake Arenal. The horses are gentle and the guides ride alongside. It is most kids' favorite memory of the trip.
7. Chocolate or Coffee Tour (all ages)
A two-hour interactive tour of a working chocolate or coffee farm. Kids grind cacao beans, taste samples at every step, and leave with a small bar they made themselves. Indoor backup if it rains hard on your adventure day.
Planning tips for families
- Mix one big adventure with one calm activity each day
- Plan around naps — most tours are 8–11 a.m. or 1–4 p.m.
- Hot springs in the evening is a great wind-down
- Choose hotels with pools — they're worth the extra cost on tired days
- Ask us about private transportation between activities
Tell us the ages of your kids and your travel dates and we will design a family itinerary that paces well, mixes thrill with downtime, and gives you the best chance of strong nap windows. Few things break a vacation faster than over-scheduling.
