The Best Time to Visit Arenal Volcano: A Complete Seasonal Guide
3/12/2026 · Arenal Volcano Park Team
There is no bad time to visit Arenal Volcano. There is, however, a best time for your particular trip — and the answer depends on whether you care more about clear volcano views, the lowest rates, fewer crowds, or seeing the rainforest at its most alive.
Quick answer
If you want the highest probability of clear skies and easy hiking, aim for January through April. If you want lush green landscapes, lower prices, and dramatic afternoon thunderstorms, May through November is wonderful. The shoulder months — late April and early December — are often the best of both worlds.
Dry season (December – April)
These are the postcard months. Mornings are clear, the volcano is usually visible until mid-afternoon, trails are firm underfoot, and Lake Arenal sparkles in the sun. The trade-off is that this is also Costa Rica's high season: hotels fill weeks in advance, tour prices peak, and you will share popular trails with more visitors. Book Christmas, New Year, and Easter dates as early as you can.
Best for
- First-time visitors who want the classic volcano view
- Families wanting predictable weather
- Hot springs and pool time without rain interruptions
- Photographers chasing golden hour light
Green season (May – November)
Locals call this the green season for good reason. Rainfall recharges waterfalls, the rainforest thickens, and wildlife is more active. Mornings are usually dry — perfect for hikes and hanging bridges — and rain typically arrives in short, dramatic bursts in the afternoon. October is the wettest month and the only one we suggest planning around carefully.
Best for
- Travelers on a budget — rates drop 20–40%
- Photographers who love moody, atmospheric skies
- Birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts
- Couples wanting a quieter, more intimate trip
Our month-by-month recommendation
- January – February: classic dry season, clear views, high crowds
- March – April: still dry, slightly warmer, busy through Easter
- May: shoulder month, deals start appearing, lush new growth
- June – August: green season at its best, North American summer crowds
- September: very green, fewer tourists, light rain most days
- October: heaviest rain, plan flexible itineraries
- November: drying out, fewer crowds, great rates
- December: dry season returns, holiday prices climb after the 15th
Weather realities at Arenal
Arenal sits at the foot of a volcano in a transitional climate zone — clouds form fast and rain can appear out of an apparently blue sky. Pack a light rain jacket year-round and quick-dry layers. Mornings hover around 18–22°C (65–72°F) and afternoons rarely exceed 28°C (82°F). The cool nights are why hot springs feel so spectacular here.
